Here’s another one of the issues where I ask “Is it just me?” or what in the world does the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue have anything to do with sports???? And if you are bold enough to identify some kind of sport associated with that, we need to have another discussion out in the parking lot. What makes this year’s issue even worse is that they had the audacity to do a section on NFL cheerleaders in bikinis. Talk about putting two “waste of time and money” things together… First of all, why are there cheerleaders in the NFL? I would like one person to prove to me that they have actually heard them cheer in one of those big domes or stadiums. To me, they are a total waste of space and money for these NFL franchises. Secondly, again, I ask, what do half-naked women in bikinis have to do with sports? The unfortunate answer I have found out from my impeccable sources is that SI’s Swimsuit issue accounts for 25% of the magazine’s annual profit!!!!! Can you believe that?!?!?!? So, it’s all about the money and a bunch of horny dudes. The Swimsuit Edition is never going away… and we only have ourselves to blame for it.

It sounds to me like you answered your own quesion. It is about money and us horny dudes. God forbid for females to be horny right? The only argument you should have is that why are there not male dancers to entertain the ladies that are watching the same sport, Let me answer it for you. It is because it’s SPORTS. Men dominate that industry so why would you NOT have cheerleaders and so forth. Sorry Sidmel the truth is what it is.

Gotta tell you, Sis,I’m not as upset as you are. The SI issue comes out during the slowest season in sports: football’s over, the NBA does its All Star thing (preempting regular play) and baseball is not yet underway. It’s a quick respite from the obvious–no compelling sports stories. As a mom of a 9-year old boy, I don’t want this objectifying of women in our house (he may sneak a copy in a few years), but I have been interested in how “regular women” look in bathing suits (sports wives). Do I run out and buy the issue? No, but it’s still interesting to catch a glimpse.

From a brother who has something to say:
Of course it’s all about the money. Otherwise there may not be a Sports Illustrated. As a business owner, you do what you have to do to stay afloat. Give the customers what they want! There are no real ethics problems here though to some perhaps a moral offense; generating lust in the hearts of the horny.
If you were in sports marketing you would really understand more why cheerleaders and the swimsuit editions have a role in sports. It’s further generating “excitement” by “packaging” an event and exploiting all the horny toads of the world!) Horny or not, it’s just one more thing, lilke scoreboard trivia, crazy mascots and loud offensive music designed to pump up the crowd…among other things.
As for me, I had to go see what all the commotion was about by thumbing through the swimsuit edition at the airport. Thanks for ENLIGHTENING me on the subject(s).
NOW A NOTE TO MY WIFE: Honey, it wasn’t really worth the time. I get to see the whole thing with you…..much more enjoyable.
(Honey, if you read this, it’s the truth and nothing but the truth!!!:)

Last years SI Bikini Issue featured Biancé Knowles! I was very happy! Thank you SI!

Drew’s note above was interesting. I also thumbed through the SI swimsuit issue, and then came home to my wife. Not the same. Not even close.

I didn’t know SI did anything except the swimsuit issue. Interesting.
I’ll check it out.

Sidmel, I am in complete agreement. I think it’s pointless.
To June, if it were such an important part of sports to attract the male population, why isn’t it in baseball or hockey or soccer. They have quite a following with the cheerleaders. One team has it in baseball and people do not like it.
Cheerleading has nothing to do with watching sports. Fans do not need help to cheer their teams on. If they are really passionate about their teams, they’ll cheer on their own.
SI should leave it to the Maxim magazine’s of the world. You don’t see ESPN doing that, even when its a slow time in sports. Just another way for people to exploit women.
